The roots contain about 1% essential oil, the main part of which is terpenes. The leaves contain 0.5 – 1.1%, the roots – 0.6 – 1.0% and the seeds – 1.1% essential oil, which has a strong, celery-like odour.
The leaves contain about 141.3 mg% of vitamin C.
All parts of the lovage contain sugar, fat, starch, resin, tannins, pectin, minerals and acids. It has a strong aroma, somewhat similar to the smell of celery.
Lovage decoction promotes the excretion of urine, improves digestion and metabolism, treats intestinal atony, is recommended for people with rheumatism, gout, also treats respiratory ailments, accelerates wound healing, eliminates skin blemishes (restores pigmentation).
