Healing properties

Ginkgo trees are the oldest trees on Earth, growing in the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods, when dinosaurs lived. Charles Darwin called them living fossils. Dried leaves and seeds have been used medicinally for thousands of years. These are good medicines for blood circulation and especially brain disorders.

Many active substances have been isolated from ginkgo trees, including flavonoid glycosides and terpene lactones (gincolides). The first have antioxidant properties, neutralize free radicals. Terpene lactones, especially ginkgolide B, have platelet-activating factor antagonistic properties. In addition, ginkgo extracts have positive effects on memory and perception.

Scientists have found that ginkgo preparations have a positive effect on the cognition of elderly patients diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.

Known for its healing properties, ginkgo is widely used in folk medicine. It improves blood circulation, dilates blood vessels (as a result, the organs are more easily supplied with blood, and at the same time with oxygen and necessary nutrients), ginkgo reduces blood viscosity; improves memory, promotes concentration. The plant can be used to treat erectile dysfunction (if the dysfunction occurs due to insufficient blood flow to the penis). Ginkgo biloba has been found to alleviate PMS. Due to its bronchodilating effect, the plant can also be used to treat bronchial asthma.

Ginkgo leaves are used to prepare medicinal preparations. They can be picked from the tree or collected after they have fallen and turned yellow in early fall. The leaves should be dried in a well-ventilated room or in a special dryer. The optimal drying temperature is 40-50 degrees Celsius. Properly prepared ginkgo leaves should be light yellow in color.

Preparation of ginkgo infusion. A teaspoon of crushed dried ginkgo leaves should be poured into a glass of boiling water and kept for half an hour. Drink a third of a glass three times a day before or after meals.

The plant should not be used by individuals who are sensitive to the active substances (or any single substance) of ginkgo.
